Hear It After Dark? Something's Nesting Up There
It usually starts the same way. You’re in bed, it’s after 10pm, and you hear something moving in the ceiling directly above you. Scratching. Light, fast movement. Then quiet. Then it starts again.
What Different Ceiling Sounds Mean
By the second or third night you know it’s not the house settling. Something is up there.
In Spring Hill and Hernando County, nocturnal ceiling sounds are roof rats in the vast majority of cases. Here’s how to be more certain, what not to do in the next 24 hours, and what happens when we come out.
Light, fast scurrying at night → Roof rats
Starts between 8pm and midnight, most active between 10pm and 2am, stops by sunrise. This timing pattern is one of the most reliable pre-inspection indicators of Rattus rattus, strictly nocturnal, beginning activity at dusk.
Heavy thumping during the day → Squirrels
If sounds are during daylight, particularly morning and mid-afternoon, and stop at dusk, squirrels are the more likely species. Heavier and less consistent in movement than roof rats.
Scratching in walls at kitchen level, any hour → House mice
If sounds are in the wall rather than the ceiling, particularly near the kitchen, house mice are more likely. Less predictably timed than roof rats.
If sounds suddenly stopped: This doesn’t mean the problem resolved. Brief disruptions from predators or route changes temporarily quiet an infestation. Roof rats return to established nesting areas consistently. A few days of quiet followed by return of sounds is a common pattern after temporary disturbances. Call during the quiet period, an early infestation produces significantly less attic contamination than one that runs another month.
What Not to Do in the Next 24 Hours
Don’t seal any visible gaps yet
If you noticed a displaced vent screen or a soffit gap, don’t seal it before an inspection. Sealing a single obvious point without mapping every entry point may redirect animals to unsealed gaps, or trap animals inside a section where they die inaccessibly. The inspection maps all entry points before anything is closed.
Don’t place poison bait
Bait causes rats to leave nesting areas to find water. They die inside wall voids or deep in attic insulation. In a Spring Hill summer, decomposition in an enclosed wall space creates an odor problem that’s often harder to deal with than the original infestation. Mechanical trapping after exclusion prevents this scenario entirely.
Don’t disturb the attic before inspection
Dry droppings disturbed without respiratory protection become aerosolized, a genuine inhalation health risk. The attic inspection is done with appropriate PPE for this reason.
What Happens When We Come Out
The initial call takes about five minutes, timing of sounds, location, pets and children present, any prior treatment attempts. We give you a specific service window.
On the visit: full exterior roofline walk from a ladder, attic interior documentation, ground-level inspection. Every entry point is photographed. You receive a written estimate with line items before any work begins. Exclusion starts the same visit if you proceed. Traps placed after exclusion is complete. Return visit at 7 to 10 days.
Scratching Ceiling Spring Hill FL
Why is the scratching sound only at night in Spring Hill?
Roof rats are almost entirely nocturnal, they begin activity at dusk and are most active between 10pm and 4am. During daylight they rest in compressed channels in attic insulation. The sounds stop at sunrise not because the animals left, but because they stopped moving.
What does it mean if scratching sounds in my ceiling suddenly stopped?
It does not mean the infestation resolved. Brief disruptions from predators or route changes temporarily quiet activity. Roof rats return to established nesting areas. A few days of silence followed by return of sounds is a common pattern. Call during the quiet period, early treatment produces far less attic contamination scope than waiting another month.
Could it be a squirrel instead of a rat in my Spring Hill ceiling?
The key indicator is timing. Night sounds, dusk through early morning, strongly indicate roof rats. Day sounds that stop at dusk indicate squirrels. In Spring Hill, nocturnal ceiling sounds have a very high probability of being roof rats rather than squirrels, simply because roof rat population pressure in Hernando County’s wooded neighborhoods is significantly higher than squirrel attic pressure.
